European shares were heading for their steepest weekly loss since November after falling for a fourth straight session on Thursday, as the specter of an escalating banking crisis in Spain fuelled further concerns about a euro zone break-up.

Asian shares recovered some ground on Thursday from the previous day's sell-off. The Nikkei share average inched back up on Thursday as upbeat Japanese economic growth data dispelled wariness over Greece's potential exit from the euro zone.
